National Lawyers for Cases Involving Metals Found in Baby Food Holding Negligent Companies Accountable
When a family welcomes a baby into their lives, joy naturally mixes with panic. How am I going to do this? Will I make a good parent? How many steps into the future must I plan ahead? But rarely do we ever consider the need to worry about the dangers inherent in baby foods. Concerned we should be, though, as independent and government-led research has found that baby foods made by some of the biggest companies have dangerous levels of metals in them.
What’s worse, according to Congress, companies not only sold dangerous baby food, but they knew the foods were dangerous when they landed on store shelves. Arsenic. Cadmium. Lead. Mercury. These dangerous metals, ingested by our vulnerable children, have been known to cause serious illnesses. If your family has been impacted by this unthinkable incident of negligence, you may be entitled to seek compensation. Call Greg Jones Law today at (855)566-3752 to schedule a free consultation.
Which Baby Foods Have Been Contaminated with Metal?
Multiple baby food makers have been hit with lawsuits or otherwise investigated for food contaminated with metals. A subcommittee report from the House of Representatives found that seven major brands had baby foods that contained “significant levels” of harmful foreign contaminants like metal.
Campbell Soup’s Plum Organic was known to have heavy metals in its products. Campbell was defiant and uncooperative with the government’s inquiry. Nature Inc.’s Happy Baby line of baby foods had levels of heavy metal contaminants higher than any healthy food, despite the company’s pledge to make healthy and organic food. Nature Inc’s foods contained arsenic levels hundreds of times higher than those allowed by the FDA – with a good quarter of their foods affected by the issue. Hain Celestial Group Inc., Gerber, and Beech-Nut have all faced similar lawsuits. Earth’s Best Organics, Wal-Mart’s “Parent’s Choice,” HappyBABY, and Sprout Organic Foods have all been found to have toxic metals in some of their products.
What Does Congress Say About the Problem?
In early 2021, the Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy, a branch of the House of Representatives, published a report on their investigation into toxic metals found in baby formulas. They found that not only did certain foods contain absurdly high levels of heavy metals, but that, in many cases, the companies knew about it, as evidenced by notes in their own documents and spreadsheets.
The report said, “The test results of baby foods and their ingredients eclipse those levels: including results up to 91 times the arsenic level, up to 177 times the lead level, up to 69 times the cadmium level, and up to five times the mercury level.”
What Are the Dangers of Metals in Baby Food?
Most of us would agree that, obviously, these metals have no place in the foods of American grocery stores. And the metals are certainly not okay within foods meant for children and infants. But few of us may really understand just what these kinds of metal contaminations can do to a child if ingested.
Metals in baby food are linked to the following:
- ADHD
- Autism
- Brain damage
- Cancer
- Cardiovascular issues
- Chronic diseases
- Compromised immune systems
- Neurotoxic effects
