Johnson & Johnson has issued another recall of 50 million more products known to cause Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TENS). This comes on the heels of a previous recall of the same drugs performed in late 2010 after concerns arose about the safety of the manufacturing conditions at the company’s Puerto Rico plant in 2008. Complaints were made against the company because it didn’t recall the drugs fast enough.
Those concerns centered around a “funky odor” emanating from within the plant; eventually, the FDA investigated the conditions at the plant. Johnson & Johnson recalled the drugs after officials said they received a “small” number of consumer complaints, namely nausea, stomach pain, diarrhea, and vomiting. The recall involved Motrin, children’s Tylenol grape meltaway tablets, extra strength Tylenol, extra strength Tylenol rapid release gelcaps, extra strength Tylenol PM gel tabs, Motrin caplets, extra strength Rolaids fresh mint tablets, St. Joseph Aspirin chewable orange tablets and Benedryl allergy ultratab tablets.
The current recall includes the Tylenol, Benadryl, Rolaids, Sudafed and Sinutab brands made in a different plant from those involved in the first recall. This recall involves drugs made in the Fort Washington, Penn., plant before the April 2010 recall. Johnson & Johnson assures consumers that the drugs involved in this recall do not include drugs like Tylenol that have already hit the shelves.
Various medications, such as Tylenol, Children’s Tylenol, Motrin, and Children’s Motrin, have been linked to SJS and TENS. SJS is a severe allergic reaction that can cause sufferers to experience painful blisters in their eyes, nose, mouth, ears, and genitals. TENS can be life-threatening as it causes patients to lose large patches of skin over as much as 70 percent of their bodies.
If you or someone you love are suffering from SJS or TENS as a result of taking any of those drugs involved in the recall, you may be entitled to receive compensation.
