Wendell Potter, the whistleblower and former communications chief for Cigna, is telling other people that are considering becoming whistleblowers to go ahead and do the right thing. Potter is known for bringing Cigna’s disinformation campaign to light, which opened the doors for many insurance disability lawsuits to be filed against big insurance companies like Cigna.
Potter says that disability insurance companies like Cigna basically get along by pushing the costs up and buying politicians as well as refusing outright to pay disability insurance claims when the majority of their policyholder get sick and need it the most.
“I worked as a senior executive at health insurance companies and I saw how they confuse their customers and dump the sick — all so they can satisfy their Wall Street investors,” he told a Senate committee. He also made it a point to say that it is a system that is rigged against policyholders.
Cigna and Unum, as well as Unum’s subsidiary disability insurance companies, have undergone many lawsuits filed by policy holders under claims that the companies practiced bad faith insurance in denying disability insurance claims that should have been approved. In some cases, these companies were even accused of approving a claim and then denying it later. They also have been accused of using scare tactics to get policyholders to drop their claims.
Some of the other claims made against Cigna and other companies include:
- declaring that disabilities aren’t disabilities (fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue and mental disorders)
- changing policies without prior knowledge or consent of the policy holder
- hiring their own in-house medical examiners to refute injury claims
- refusing to allow medical examiner reports to be admitted for consideration
