European drug regulators are currently recommending a new anticoagulant medication for approval in treating patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). The new drug, Eliquis, is made by American drug giants Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. and Pfizer.

Both Pfizer and Bristol-Myers have stated that advisers to the European Medicines Agency have rendered the new drug Eliquis as a safe and effective treatment for AF as long as the condition wasn’t caused by a heart valve problem. If the drug is approved, it could be sold all over Europe, including Iceland and Norway. This could bring about a major boost in the overall revenues of both companies, since the drug has been rejected twice by the FDA for sale in the U.S. after the American regulators determined that there wasn’t enough information on Eliquis to justify its safety and efficacy.

Eliquis is most commonly known as Apixaban, and is one of the newer drugs that is being viewed by many experts as a safer and more effective alternative stroke prevention medication for AF patients. Current medications include the ever-popular Warfarin and the infamous anticoagulant Multaq. Multaq is an anticoagulant medication that is made by Sanofi-Aventis. The drug is rarely prescribed now due to its link to liver failure and a worsening of the heart condition. It was hoped that Eliquis would help edge out the use of Multaq altogether.

Doctors have been hunting for a replacement drug to Warfarin, which can be a tricky medication to prescribe since much of the risk comes from the constant guesswork involved in finding the right dosage to give each patient. Warfarin also causes internal bleeding in some patients and requires constant monitoring to prevent that and the development of blood clots. The drug is also known to interact poorly with certain foods as well.
