Information from a new study shows that the newer anticoagulant medication Pradaxa (dabigatran) may cause patients to develop viral infections that may be fatal to kids and young adults. The study was conducted by researchers from the University of North Carolina. They reported that Pradaxa might inhibit the immune system. The pills are designed to inhibit the blood’s clotting system which is called thrombin.

“Pradaxa inhibits clot formation by reducing fibrin deposition and platelet aggregation,” said Dr. Nigel Mackman, the lead researcher. “Importantly, Pradaxa might not only facilitate significant lifesaving effects in reducing cardiac death but may also interfere with other processes in the body.”

Mackman has also made it clear that studies must be conducted to see if another popular anticoagulant has the same effects on the immune system, just to see if the problem is isolated only to Pradaxa. Warfarin and Pradaxa are used to treat patients that have atrial fibrillation, which is characterized by patients experiencing irregular heartbeats and fluttering heartbeats. The pills are used mostly to help prevent strokes, which are common in AF patients.

Other medications are also used to treat AF. One such drug is Multaq. Multaq is another anticoagulant medications that is made by Sanofi-Aventis and has been linked to serious side effects including a worsening of the heart condition, liver failure and lung toxicity. It is for this reason that the FDA has recommended that doctors only prescribe Multaq if all other medications fail to work. Many experts are calling for the pills to be recalled from the market due to the risks linked to them.

If you or a loved one has suffered from liver failure or a worsening heart condition after being treated with Multaq, contact the attorneys at Greg Jones today for a free consultation. I am experienced at fighting Multaq lawsuits and may be able to help you recover money for your injuries.
