National Lawyers Representing CPAP Cancer Lawsuits Across the United States
Because of sleep apnea and other breathing conditions, many Americans now rely upon the use of a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) or Bi-Level Positive Airway Pressure (BiPAP) machine. Though we may consider these machines to be annoying in their noise or make, they have allowed many of us to sleep through the night for the first time in years. And, what’s more, studies have shown that they can help prevent illnesses like heart problems.
However, due to the faulty make of some Philips machines, there is now believed to be a cancer risk linked to the use of various CPAP and BiPAP devices. If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with cancer or another serious illness after using a recalled Philips CPAP machine, you may be entitled to seek financial compensation to help pay for medical expenses and pain and suffering. Do Philips’ CPAP Machines Cause Cancer?
Philips has had to recall approximately 80% of the machines they’ve developed to help users who suffer from sleep apnea. The CPAP, BiPAP, and ventilators in question contain a polyester-based polyurethane foam used to quiet the machine and lessen vibrations during use. Unfortunately, it’s been shown that this foam can break down, and when it does so, it releases dangerous particles and gasses into the air.
If these particles and gasses are breathed in through the device’s tubing, they can be hazardous to your health and cause any number of issues, ranging from bad headaches to numerous forms of cancer. Phillips CPAP lawsuits have cited Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and leukemia and cancers relating to the lungs, skin, rectum, eyes, nose, bladder, stomach, testicles, thyroid, liver, brain, breasts, prostate, and kidneys.
What Are the Potential Health Risks?
In addition to the potential to cause cancer, these defective CPAP and BiPAP machines have been linked to other health concerns. And though the list may not seem as damning as the list of cancers, these illnesses and injuries can be disruptive to one’s life nonetheless.
The breaking down of foam in Philips CPAP, BiPAP, and ventilation machines can lead to:
- Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).
- Airway inflammation and irritation.
- Chest pressure.
- Ear inflammation.
- Eye irritation.
- Heart problems.
- Kidney damage.
- Liver damage.
- Lung damage.
- Nausea and vomiting.
- Reactive airway disease (RAD).
- Sinus infection.
- Skin irritation.
- Toxic and “carcinogenic effects”
