Chemicals like GenX are linked to Thyroid Cancer

Scientists and toxicologists raised concern about water contaminated with GenX because of its similarity to C8 chemical, which has been classified as possibly carcinogenic to humans.

When GenX was introduced by Dupont in the manufacturing process of Teflon in 2009, it was touted as a better alternative to PFOA or C8 (perfluorooctanoic acid) after they were banned and phase out by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Eight companies used C8 and are responsible for that contaminant.

After massive class action lawsuits were filed for alleging direct connections of PFOA/C8 to various cancers, thyroid and liver diseases, and reproductive problems, among other ailments, more scientific studies were published about its dangers to human health.

A C8 Science Panel found probable links between elevated PFOA blood levels and high cholesterol (hypercholesteremia), ulcerative colitis, thyroid function, testicular cancer, kidney cancer, preeclampsia, as well as elevated blood pressure during pregnancy.

Additional studies identified possible associations between ulcerative colitis, thyroid disease, and pregnancy-induced hypertension.

Residents in areas of these chemical releases showed 500 percent higher PFOA concentrations in blood compared to a representative U.S. population.

A CDC guide for clinicians says, “PFOS and PFOA may pose potential adverse effects for human health given their potential toxicity, mobility, and bioaccumulation potential.”
A large-scale study was conducted of children living near a chemical plant that associated PFOA with hypothyroidism. Also, other chemicals of the same family of compounds (PFOS and PFNA) had effects on thyroid hormone levels.

HOW CAN I BE EXPOSED TO GENX, PFOA, OR C8 CHEMICALS?

You can be exposed to PFOA and other similar compounds in ski wax, waterproof fabrics, and carpeting treated to be stain-resistant.

However, scientific evidence says the main concerns are with the contaminants in the drinking water.

PFOA, also known as C8, is a man-made chemical that is supposed to get burned in the process of making Teflon and leave insignificant amounts in the final products. But the exposure to the chemical compound during the industrial process and its discharges onto bodies of water has potential health effects on the population that drinks from the same water supply. It stays in the environment and the human blood for a long time.

People that were exposed to C8 in their workplace or living in communities where it was dumped into rivers that contaminated local water supplies, had higher levels of the chemical in their blood.

Chemours plant in Fayetteville has been discharging the chemical to Cape Fear River for years and it was found in Wilmington, North Carolina drinking water.

The American Cancer Society refers to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance, that people whose regular source of drinking water is found to have higher than normal levels of PFOA or similar chemicals might consider using bottled water or installing activated carbon water filters.

There are 250,000 people living in Brunswick, New Hanover, and Pender counties that could have been exposed to concentrations of GenX and its related chemicals from the tap water.
