A Pradaxa lawsuit was filed on May 2, 2013, by Texas resident Roy Mosby in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas. The lawsuit was filed after Mosby suffered from an intestinal bleed that hospitalized him. Mosby, who was taking the anticoagulant, believes Pradaxa is to blame.

Pradaxa has been the subject of scrutiny after the drug was found to cause excessive and irreversible bleeding in patients. The drug is approved as a treatment for patients suffering from atrial fibrillation (AF), a condition that causes irregular heartbeats and flutters. Pradaxa is an anticoagulant medication that was meant to aid in preventing strokes. Mosby filed his lawsuit amid claims that the manufacturers of Pradaxa didn’t properly warn him of the bleeding risks on the warning label before he started taking the pills.

When Pradaxa first hit the market, it was hailed as a safer and more effective AF treatment than the first generation pills called Warfarin; however, warnings have since been added after it was found to cause excessive bleeding that is often impossible to stop. Mosby continues his claim by adding that earlier marketing campaigns show that the manufacturers “overstated the efficacy of Pradaxa and failed to disclose that the medication had no reversal agent.” Mosby also accuses the pills’ producer, Boehringer Ingelheim, of failing to warn emergency room doctors and other vital medical personnel of the fact that there is no effective reversal agent for the bleeding, which left the staff unequipped to properly help him.

AF is also treated with less popular drugs like Multaq. Multaq is made by Sanofi-Aventis and has been linked to serious side effects including a worsening of the heart condition, liver failure and lung toxicity. It is for this reason that the FDA has recommended that doctors only prescribe Multaq if all other medications fail to work.
