The antibiotic prescription medication Doryx was updated back in March to include Stevens-Johnson syndrome, Toxic Epdermal Necrolysis and Erymetha multiforme as potential side effects.

Doryx is used for treating certain bacterial infections. The drug can be used by itself or in combination with other drugs to treat acne or certain amoeba infections. Doryx also has been used to treat different types of malaria in people who are travelling to areas of the world that are known to have malaria. It is meant to be used for periods of less than 4 months. In addition, Doryx sometimes is used as a treatment for anthrax exposure as the drug has been shown to slow the progression of anthrax.

The delayed-release version of Doryx is considered a tetracycline antibiotic. The drug works because it slows down the bacteria’s growth process, which allowed the body’s immune system to fight off the bacteria that is causing the infection. While side effects of Doryx have been listed as renal problems, high blood pressure, blood problems like anemia and changes in the thyroid gland, the drug’s side effects recently were updated to add skin hypersensitivity, SJS and TENS. SJS is a rare and potentially fatal skin disease that causes the body to burn from the inside out.
