Popular rapper Lil Wayne recently disclosed that he is an epileptic after suffering from a couple of seizures that put him in the hospital. Reports about the incident claimed that he was hospitalized after drinking “sizzurp,” which is a cocktail mixture that contains cough syrup with codeine in it. Wayne denies drinking the mixture.

“The bad news is I’m an epileptic, I’m prone to seizures,” Wayne said during a phone in conversation to Los Angeles radio station Power 106. “Like, this isn’t my first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh seizure. I’ve had a bunch of seizures, y’all just never hear about them. But this time it got real bad ’cause I had three of them in a row and on the third one, my heart rate went down to like 30 percent. Basically, I could’ve died, so that is why it was so serious. But the reason being for the seizures is just plain stress, no rest, overworking myself.”

Wayne also said that his seizures occur often enough that he surrounds himself with people who are experienced in dealing with them when they occur.

“They already know how to handle it,” he said. “Certain times I don’t even go to the hospital, but this time, it was real bad because, like I said, it was three in a row, and I’ve never had three back-to-back like that.”

Seizures are a common characteristic of epileptics. The condition affects millions of people worldwide. Lately many celebrities have been coming out about being epileptics, including Kelly Osbourne, the daughter of heavy metalist Ozzy Osbourne, who also was hospitalized after having a seizure.

Epilepsy is treated with various anti-seizure medications, one of which is Topamax. But Topamax has been linked to serious side effects, including birth defects in babies whose mothers take the drugs while pregnant. Children may be born with birth defects such as PPHN, spina bifida, neural tube defects, oral clefts and heart, lung and brain defects after exposure to Topamax in-utero.
