Atrial fibrillation is a heart condition that causes patients to suffer from an irregular and fluttering heartbeat. The condition is known to cause many patients to experience strokes, which is why management of the condition is crucial to maintaining a patient’s quality of life and, sometimes, even saving their life.

The condition is often managed with anticoagulant medications (blood thinners) which help to prevent the blood clots that can lead to strokes. There are numerous different types of anticoagulant medications, and this has made it difficult to figure out which drugs are best to use. The only thing that is clear is that all of the medications are better than Multaq.

Multaq is made by Sanofi-Aventis and has been linked to serious side effects, which include a worsening of the heart condition, liver failure, lung disease and pulmonary toxicity. All of the side effects are potentially fatal. Perhaps that is why the anticoagulant warfarin is the most popular prescription for treating AF. However, other drugs are quickly gaining steam over warfarin.

Some of the newer anticoagulants to gain attention include apixaban, dabigatran and amiodarone. Each of these drugs has been proven to aid in stroke prevention for AF patients, but they offer only marginal benefits over warfarin. All of the drugs are also known to cause bleeding. Some of these prescription drugs have been shown to overshadow warfarin at AF stroke prevention after ablations in recent studies. However, for now, warfarin remains the pinnacle of prescription drug treatment for AF patients, and will likely remain so until something phenomenal occurs. All that really matters is that all of the drugs are less dangerous than Multaq. Perhaps that is why Multaq is now all but ignored by doctors and is only recommended to be used as a treatment if every other drug fails.
