Multaq is an anticoagulant medication that is used to treat atrial fibrillation (AF). AF is a condition that is characterized by patients experiencing irregular or fluttering heartbeats. These days, the most popular treatment for the condition involves prescription medications like Multaq, which are also used to help prevent strokes. However, the prescription drugs have been proven to cause numerous side effects that may be fatal.

Multaq in particular has been linked to numerous side effects, which include liver failure and a worsening of the heart condition that had been proven to be fatal for many patients during clinical trials. In the PALLAS clinical trial — which was conducted to test Multaq’s effects on patients with permanent AF — numerous patients died. This forced Sanofi-Aventis, the makers of Multaq, to cancel the trial; the FDA subsequently issued a recommendation that Multaq only be used in cases where other prescription AF medications like Warfarin weren’t effective.

In September of 2012, the FDA issued a new warning on the dangers of Multaq use when they told Sanofi that Multaq was also linked to lung disease and pulmonary toxicity. On September 7, 2012 the FDA sent a letter to Sanofi-Aventis that stated that:

“Cases of interstitial lung disease including pneumonitis and pulmonary fibrosis have been reported in patients treated with Multaq in the post-marketing setting. Onset of dyspnea or non-productive cough may be related to pulmonary toxicity and patients should be carefully evaluated clinically. If pulmonary toxicity is confirmed, Multaq should be discontinued.”

From the information in the FDA letter, it appears as if Multaq should officially be confirmed as too dangerous to use. This could mean that previous warnings and restrictions on Multaq use could be replaced by a complete recall of the drug. Now that the FDA has stated that Multaq use should be discontinued, it is only a matter of time before the drug is completely removed from the shelves.
