Janumet is a prescription drug used to treat various conditions that are caused by patients having type-2 diabetes. The drug is also known that have many side effects, and one of them is now officially Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS).

A new post-hoc analysis, based on the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE/ACE) diabetes algorithm that was presented at the American Diabetes Association (ADA) Annual Scientific Sessions, shows that a lot more patients who treat their type 2 diabetes with Janumet (sitagliptin/metformin HCl) in tablet form reached their blood sugar level goals after only 18 weeks, as opposed to those that only took metformin as part of their initial therapy.

Janumet is used when diet and exercise are not possible as a way to improve glycemic control in adults that have type 2 diabetes. It is mostly used for patients that require both sitagliptin and metformin. Barry J. Goldstein, M.D., Ph.D., Vice President and Therapeutic Area Head, Diabetes and Endocrinology, Merck Research Laboratories, says, “Close to half of all patients with type 2 diabetes have not achieved adequate blood sugar control, and patients often require combination therapy to reach blood sugar goals. The results of this post-hoc analysis provide additional data regarding the use of combination therapy with Janumet for appropriate patients.”

Janumet, like all other medications, also comes with its own warnings, which in this case include SJS. In fact, post-marketing reports state that Janumet can cause various “serious hypersensitivity reactions in patients treated with sitagliptin, one of the components of Janumet, such as anaphylaxis, angioedema, and exfoliative skin conditions including Stevens-Johnson syndrome, because these reactions are reported voluntarily from a population of uncertain size.”

SJS is a condition that causes the body to burn from the inside out. It is characterized by symptoms like rash, painful blisters all over the body and inside the mucus membranes as well as skin peeling off in patches. For some patients, it can even cause death.
