According to a study that was published online in the Journal of American College of Cardiology, practicing yoga can significantly reduce AF patients’ symptoms. The study was conducted by Dhanunjaya Lakkireddy, M.D., from the University of Kansas Hospital & Medical Center in Kansas City, and colleagues.

Researchers for this study conducted their pre-post study of AF patients by assigning and monitoring AF patients who were practicing yoga, twice a week for 60 minutes per session for three months. They then continued to monitor the patients for another three months. What they found was that the AF patients who did yoga experienced fewer symptoms of AF, depression and anxiety than those that didn’t. They also found that yoga significantly improved the patients’ overall quality of life, and that their blood pressure decreased dramatically.

“In patients with paroxysmal AF, yoga improves symptoms, arrhythmia burden, heart rate, blood pressure, anxiety and depression scores, and several domains of quality of life,” the authors write.

Atrial fibrillation is a heart condition that causes patients to suffer from irregular heartbeats and fluttering heartbeat. The condition is known to cause many patients to experience strokes, which is why management of the condition is crucial to maintaining a patient’s quality of life — and, sometimes, saving their life in general. The condition is often managed with anticoagulant medications which help to prevent the blood clots that can lead to strokes. There are numerous different types of anticoagulant medications, and one of them is Multaq.

Like many prescription medications, Multaq can be a dangerous drug to take once the side effects are considered. Some of the serious side effects linked to Multaq include a worsening of the heart condition, liver failure, lung disease and pulmonary toxicity. Side effects like these are why researchers continue to look for different ways of managing AF that are safer. While yoga cannot help prevent strokes in AF patients like some medications do, the practice may be able to lessen AF episodes, which is a considerable feat.
