According to a new cohort study of Cox-2 inhibitors, the drugs do not pose an increased risk of patients suffering from MI, strokes or heart failures.

The study was conducted in Sweden and specifically looked at Vioxx, which has been removed from the shelves across the world after it was discovered to cause heart problems for patients. This caused researchers to want to see if other Cox-2 inhibitors had the same effect.

“The warnings (following rofecoxib’s withdrawal from the market) have led to precautions, and the way that Cox-2 inhibitors are used now is not associated with increased cardiovascular risk,” says the study’s lead author, Dr. Magnus Bäck, Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden.

This study’s report was published online on November 21, 2011, in the European Heart Journal. However, one thing that Bäck’s study also showed is that there’s an increased risk of patients developing atrial fibrillation (AF) with these types of drugs, “which may have been overlooked.” For the most part, more research has to be conducted before these results can be confirmed. Bäck has stated that some precautions might have to be taken with regard to atrial fibrillation when doctors start to prescribe these drugs.

The fact is, Bäck explains, that since Vioxx has been removed from the market, there are still other Cox-2 inhibitors being prescribed in Sweden, such as Celebrex and Arcoxia. Each of these drugs comes with a warning that it can cause cardiovascular events like AF. AF is characterized by patients experiencing an irregular heartbeat. It is treated with various medications, which include Multaq. Multaq has suffered controversy after it was discovered that one of the side effects of taking the drug was liver failure. Multaq is also known to worsen some patients’ heart conditions.
