A new study has found that the new anticoagulant medication Eliquis, made by Pfizer and Bristol-Myers Squibb, proved as effective as the widely-used drug Warfarin in treating a venous thromboembolism. The study also found that the drug caused less bleeding.

According to the study, Eliquis reduced major bleeding risks by 70 percent as well as a 50 percent reduction in clinically non-major bleeding events. Excessive bleeding has long been linked to the use of anticoagulants like Warfarin, which is used to treat atrial fibrillation as well. Dr. Giancarlo Agnelli, the study’s lead investigator, referred to the results as “a remarkable real advantage” for Eliquis.

“This is to me the most striking finding of this study in terms of potential changes to clinical practice,” said Agnelli during a telephone interview. The results of this study have also been published in the New England Journal of Medicine. “This really makes Apixaban a really safe compound,” he added. Apixaban is the chemical name of the drug Eliquis.

Recently, the bleeding risks of various anticoagulants like Warfarin has come under fire. Newer drugs like Apixaban (Eliquis) and Dabigatran (Pradaxa) were hoped to be a better and safer alternative to Warfarin because patients could take less of the drugs, which was thought to be the reason why it would lower the bleeding risks. However, this study seeks to refute the increased risks with the newer drugs.

Other anticoagulants have been used to treat atrial fibrillation and other heart complications. One of those drugs was Multaq. Multaq is made by Sanofi-Aventis and has been linked to serious side effects including a worsening of the heart condition, liver failure and lung toxicity. It is for this reason that the FDA has recommended that doctors only prescribe Multaq if all other medications fail to work.

If you or a loved one has suffered from liver failure or a worsening heart condition after being treated with Multaq, contact the attorneys at Greg Jones today for a free consultation. I am experienced at fighting Multaq lawsuits and may be able to help you recover money for your injuries.
