According to an article that was published in the Journal of Paediatric Neurosciences Medics, researchers from Leicester Royal Infirmary’s Department of Paediatric Neurology are suggesting that epileptic children may benefit from taking vitamin D supplements since the anti-seizure medications many kids are given often lead to bone mineral density loss.

The researchers explain that with the bone mineral density loss, the epileptic children are more likely to suffer from fractures and breaks than other children who don’t take the drugs. During their research, the team analyzed and examined different groups of literature that had been collected on the subject of vitamin D supplementation in epileptic kids who were taking anti-seizure medication. The researchers noted that there is not enough evidence in this matter and explained that more studies will have to be conducted in order to confirm the benefits of vitamin D on kids with epilepsy. They also argued in writing that there is also not enough proof to state that it doesn’t benefit them, which means that the fracture risk of epileptic kids is still an issue “and that vitamin D therapy may be beneficial.”

“As low-dose vitamin D supplementation (400 IU per day) is now recommended for healthy children and it is biologically feasible that children with epilepsy may be at higher risk of clinically significant deficiency, it is important that neurologists ensure that low-dose vitamin D supplementation should be prescribed and compliance followed up in children with epilepsy,” they concluded.

Anti-seizure medications are often given to kids and adults with epilepsy. One of those medications is Topamax. Topamax has been linked to an increased risk of suicide and suicidal thoughts as well as and birth defects in women whose babies are exposed to the drug in-utero. Some of those birth defects linked to Topamax use during pregnancy include cleft lips, cleft palates, genital defects and other birth malformations.
